Our Story

Fighting for What We Believe In. Together.

Grayscale Sustainability began as an initiative from a partnership with Youth Challenge International, by participating in their six-months Youth Climate Leadership Program.

We aim to facilitate the process of finding tools to live in a more sustainable and socially conscious way while inspiring others to do the same. For this, we will be focusing on engaging with the community around us and the environment, always from an intersectional perspective.

We hope to help people become more aware of the crisis we are facing and the tools we have to decrease its negative effects, therefore gaining the empowerment they need to create a more conscious community that cares and acts accordingly.

Intersectionality

“Intersectionality is a lens through which you can see where power comes and collides, where it interlocks and intersects.”

Why Grayscale Sustainability?

The Problem

Sustainability is more than just consuming less; for it to be possible, we must consider: environment, economy, and equity. All three concepts are intertwined, for one cannot function properly without the others.

People are not always aware of the intersectionality that exists within the environmental fight. Our individual characteristics also place us in contexts in which we might be less or more likely to know how to fight climate change or to have the resources to do so. And when we do have the resources and the minimal knowledge of the situation, we do not tend to make significant adjustments to our lifestyles.

Feelings of anxiety and guilt make it overwhelming and push us to ignore the problem. And the ones that try to change find themselves alone, going against the tide in a world where consumerism and individualism govern.

Moreover, underserved communities are the ones that are affected the most and contradictory the least considered when looking for a solution.

The Solution

Everything we do can make a significant difference if we do it together. That is why connecting with those around us is essential.

Similarly, connecting with the environment can give us a stronger sense of care for it.

For Grayscale Sustainability, the goal is to help people connect. For that, all voices must be heard, and we must recognize and use our privilege to secure that happens.

We want to develop tools that facilitate transitioning to a more sustainable and socially conscious lifestyle by giving people the knowledge and, therefore, the empowerment they need to contribute to any of the different solutions to climate change.

The Meaning Behind our Name

Grayscale Sustainability is a set of different aspects that make part of something bigger. It is more than just consuming less. And just as it happens with sustainability, being an environmental advocate implies considering all aspects of the problem.

Nothing is black and white; everything is a grayscale :)
